thank you for coming. and thank you to all of you for being here, and thank you to our speaker for making it here. we had planned for him to come to a different event some time ago and the weather got in the way. this time, the weather did not prevent him from arriving and we are so excited to have steve woodworth. he taught for eight years at toccoa, so he has some good georgia roots in that area, and he went on to texas christian university, where he is the powerhouse. the people who say, who should i study with? he is one of the first names to come up for them and for me. one of my first books of steve s was jefferson davis as general. it was an area that did not have his name associated with it. i picked of volume that had a thomas connection, the chickamauga campaign. steve has co-edited many more than that. i asked him, i said have you continued to produce looks at the same level that you produce children, as he has a huge family. the absolute nicest people in the world
this 45-minute talk was part of a day-long conference hosted by the university of virginia s center for civil war history. so we will begin this morning s lecture with gary w. gallagher. as many of you know, we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to professor gallagher. he was the founding director of the nau center, retired just last spring from uva where he held the john l. nau chair in civil war history from 1999 to 2018. he is the author or editor of at least 39 books, including the union war, the american war and most recently civil war places which, too, is in the back, beautiful book, his son will took the photographs and this is an absolute treasure if you haven t had a chance to see it yet. so with that i d like to welcome gary gallagher.it yet. so with that i d like to welcome gary gallagher. thank you, carrie. we are on a very tight schedule today which carrie has made clear to all of us in the front row, especially steve. steve asked me to say that he will
dr. james iredell robertson junior associate professor of civil war history at virginia tech. he is the author or editor of various books, including shifting grounds, nationalism and the american south, which won the british association for american studies but prize, the book prize the jefferson , davis award for the museum of the confederacy, and the albert lee sturm award. his work has appeared in journals such as the journal of southern history and the journal of the civil war era. among his research research project are the south carolina cosman who achieved notoriety by caning senator charles sumner on the floor of the senate in 1856. and mapping the fourth of july and the civil war era, a project with colleagues in education, computer science and the libraries at virginia tech. he serves on the board of the society of civil war historians, the editorial board of the journal of civil war history, the board of the smithfield press foundation and the historians advi

[applause] all right. start at page one, andy. it is a real honor to share time with the group of historians as i understand by your quote. it is a privilege to speak to a group whose knowledge about the civil war is only matched by their curiosity to learn more. i want to draw some distinctions right off the bat my colleagues i am guessing representing awful entertaining looks for things that happen. it might be subtitled speculation. as i will affect something that might have had, it s not proven. to begin, i want to take a side trip sure yo
