Fresh off a blowout win to end their last homestand, the Fredericksburg Nationals fell flat in the first game of their series against the Fayetteville Woodpeckers in a 10-0 shutout loss.
Julio Robaina (W, 4-1) allowed only two hits over 5.0 shutout innings to earn the win for the Woodpeckers, and Cesar Gomez (1) worked the final four innings to earn his first save.
Rodney Theophile (L, 1-8) struck out a career-high seven batters over 4.1 innings, but after starting the game with a pair of scoreless innings ran into trouble in the third. Jordan Brewer opened the scoring with an RBI groundout, and Yainer Diaz lined a two-out, three-run double to right-center to extend the Fayetteville lead to 4-0.

Trade-happy Nationals deal OF Kyle Schwarber to Red Sox

The Washington Nationals continue to be baseball s most active seller less than 24 hours before the trade deadline.
The Nationals made a pair of deals Thursday, shipping slugger Kyle Schwarber to the American League East-leading Boston Red Sox while later reportedly sending veteran reliever Daniel Hudson to the San Diego Padres.
Hours after reportedly shipping Max Scherzer and Trea Turner to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a separate deal, the Nationals moved their third All-Star of the day, Schwarber, to Boston for pitching prospect Aldo Ramirez.
Within an hour of that transaction, Washington kept up the trading frenzy by agreeing to deal Hudson, a right-hander, for minor league right-handed pitcher Mason Thompson, according to The Athletic. The Washington Post reported that the Nationals would get shortstop Jordy Barley in addition to Thompson.

It s only a matter of hours before Major League Baseball s trade deadline arrives at 4 p.m. ET on Friday. The trade market is already in full throttle with the trades of Max Scherzer and Anthony Rizzo and more big names are expected to be on the move on Friday.
And keep in mind - the July 30 trade deadline is now the one and only; the traditional Aug. 31 waivers deadline is no more, so teams with an eye toward the playoffs must lock in their October personnel by Friday afternoon.

The Padres took advantage of the Nationals’ fire sale one that has seen them ship off Brad Hand, Kyle Schwarber, and reportedly Max Scherzer and Trea Turner over the last 24 hours and swung a late-night deal for veteran reliever Daniel Hudson. Pitching prospect Mason Thompson and shortstop Jordy Barley head back to Washington in return:
Hudson, 34, should give another boost to a Padres bullpen that already has a majors-best 2.97 ERA and features a pair of dominant late-inning options in Mark Melancon and Drew Pomeranz. Hudson has been rather unpredictable during his 12-season major league career; at times he’s looked like one of the worst pitchers in baseball, and as recently as last year he had a 6.10 ERA (despite good peripheral numbers in 21 appearances).
