train traveling from seat toll chicago. images of the scene show toppled cars and people gathered around the tracks. authorities say eight out of the ten cars were derailed. the crash happened in a remote area near joplin, montana. that is about 30 miles from the canadian border. let s goat cnn aviation and transportation correspondent pete munteen. a team of federal investigators headed to the scene to figure out what happened. what do we know so far about some of the condition surrounding this derailment? reporter: the big question is why did this happen? a tragic end to what was supposed to be a beautiful trip, only about half over. amtrak is deeply saddened three people died in this incident. 141 passengers on board and 16 crew, and amtrak now says passengers and crew were among the injured. this all happened about 4:00 p.m. mountain time on saturday. two locomotives, ten cars in all, about eight of those according amtrak derailed up from the original five that was
there. reporter: officials say at least three people have been killed with more injured as rescue crews work to help passengers of these overturned train cars. the empire builder 727 had taken off from chicago and headed towards seattle, a trip amtrak says on its website that allows passengers to experience the rugged splendor of the american west, including major portions of the lewis erik clark trail and instead around 4:00 p.m. mountain time on saturday near joplin, montana, the idyllic scene turned to tragedy. probably 10 to 15 seconds of rocking back and forth and tons of noise and then we came to a stop. robin vander vest was taking a rest in one of the sleeper cars that did not derail. amtrak said there were approximately 114 passengers and 16 true members. the train had two locomotives and ten cars in total, eight of which derailed. i would describe the experience as extreme turbulence on an airplane but like louder and there was kind of a lot of smoke smell.
