TVA Files Plan To Study Retirement Of Cumberland Coal Plant Tuesday, May 11, 2021
The Tennessee Valley Authority on Tuesday submitted notice of its intent to file an Environmental Impact Statement for the retirement of the Cumberland Fossil Plant in Cumberland City, Tn. Through the upcoming EIS process, TVA will identify the timeline to retire the plant’s two coal units and if any replacement generation is needed.
“This is an opportunity for TVA to show that it is listening to the people of the Tennessee Valley when they ask for clean technologies such as solar power and battery storage,” said JoAnn McIntosh, a clean energy advocate with the Tennessee Chapter of the Sierra Club based in Clarksville, Tn. “Cumberland is one of the nation’s largest and most polluting coal plants, releasing over 8 million tons of carbon pollution into the air each year, as well as 20 times more mercury into the water than any other U.S. coal plant. Eighty-eight years after the Tennessee Valley Authority was created to harness the power of the Tennessee River, America s biggest public utility is turning to the sun, splitting atoms and natural gas plants to power its future.
The power shift outlined in a new strategic guide endorsed Thursday by TVA directors will phase out coal-fired power generation by 2035 to help limit the emission of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. TVA plans next week to give the required notice to begin the process of shutting down the two-unit Cumberland Fossil plant in Cumberland City, Tennessee TVA s biggest coal plant and by July TVA should give notice of its plans to close the nine-unit Kingston fossil plant in Kingston, Tennessee.
Clean Energy Advocates Call on TVA to Halt Its Plans for New Gas, Align with Federal Goals
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Clean energy groups, in public comments submitted on March 13, are calling on the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to halt its plans for a massive build-out of gas-fired power plants that are inconsistent with President Biden’s call for net zero emissions in the power sector by 2035. The Southern Environmental Law Center on behalf of Sierra Club, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, and Energy Alabama, argue that new gas is costly, adds significant risk to customers and that TVA failed to analyze any alternatives such as energy efficiency or renewable energy should it need new capacity.

The nation’s largest public power utility this week kicked off a sweeping electric vehicle charging expansion in Tennessee and announced progress in its goal of slashing carbon emissions 80% by 2040. The Tennessee Valley Authority also took a procedural step forward in an advanced nuclear reactor proposal at a site southwest of Knoxville, Tenn.
But to environmentalists’ chagrin, TVA also announced it would replace shuttered fossil fuel power plants with new natural gas-fired generation in Kentucky and Alabama. And the federal agency has not revealed plans to fully decarbonize its electricity mix by 2035 potentially putting it on a crash course with a signature Biden administration clean energy goal
