Children are more than 'market value'

Opinion In my career, I have asked thousands of parents what they want for their children as a result of their being educated. Invariably, the answer is happiness, by which they meant privately content and publicly fulfilled. Ironically, BEST (Better Education Starts Today Putting Students First), Bill 64’s implementation scheme, implies that children which it describes as our most valuable asset exist almost exclusively as interchangeable articles of trade in the open-market economy. When education and the people who engage in it are treated like just one more plentiful commodity, our individual and collective humanity take a big hit.

'Friendship of utility' never ends well

Winnipeg Free Press By: John R. Wiens Opinion LATELY we’ve seen how political friendships in the U.S. and Canada can present serious threats and cause considerable harm to the credibility of politicians, the integrity of their leaders and to the reliability of the political process itself. When friendships, in whatever form, perpetuate lies in the name of partisan or personal loyalty, create disgraceful alliances in the name of solidarity and personal gain, or dismiss legitimate calls for public accountability, they undermine our very democratic institutions. Aristotle, in books VIII and IX of The Nicomachean Ethics, was one of the few people to write about politics in terms of friendship. And he foresaw the problems we are living with today.
