fellowships now to working biographers. the fellowship is not up to $72,000, so it s a really substantial fellowship. and i m pleased to announce also that we had just gotten the university to approve a masters program in biography, a two-year degree program that s going to start in the fall of 2019. it s an outgrowth of this program here. all very exciting. but this evening we re here to listen to ben macintyre talk about his new spy biography, the spy and the traitor , and we re in for a real treat. his new book really does read like a spy thriller it and aftr his talk will have time for a few questions and then he will be signing books. and also we are passing around a clipboard to people, we want you to sign, give us your e-mail if you re so inclined so that we can tell you about our future events. some want to say i first met ben at the literary festival. i think it was in 2010 and you just published operation mincemeat of his book about world war ii deception operation

for the new york times, covered policy in government. he died right here but we were able to complete his memoir before he died. the memoir only covers the civil rights period, unfortunately, that s as far as we got, but even in that time period, he was like the forrest gump of journalism. he was in birmingham, alabama, he covered the emmitt till trial, was with martin luther king, so he was quite a journalist. he was everywhere at the right time. what was the reaction your dad would receive down south when he was reporting? not good. he started working in 1949 when coverage of black issues was not popular at all, and he suffered a lot of pushback from both friends and the status quo at the time. he continued to write stories that were relevant and finally became major national stories. you mentioned several seminal moments in the civil rights movement. how were they covered at the time, and [ inaudible ]? it was interesting because at first, a lot of writers of the

[inaudible conversation] [inaudible conversation] [inaudible conversation] good morning and welcome to the roosevelt presidential library. we re glad to have you today and we re very happy about our annual reading festival and this wonderful turnout as well. especially on her 75th anniversary which we are celebrating on june 30. i think president roosevelt would be quite pleased to see everyone and to see this turnout and to know that his library, as he intended would be used for research and scholarship to continue to explore the issues of his era and especially how they still have an impact today on our political and social life. now i m going to speak for just a moment about how this works. many of you already know
