Seth Andrew, who once led a charter school in Rhode Island that evolved into Blackstone Valley Prep, was arrested Tuesday on charges that he stole more than $200,000 from the national network of charters he founded, using it to get a better interest rate on a New York City apartment. Seth Andrew, founder of Democracy Prep, was arrested in Manhattan on wire fraud, money laundering and false statement charges. Attorney Michael Yaeger said Andrew, 42, will plead not guilty to the charges. In 2009, Andrew was recruited by then-Mayor Daniel McKee of Cumberland and the school’s board of directors to run a brand new mayoral academy called Democracy Prep Blackstone Valley. ....

(Breeze photo by Nicole Dotzenrod) LINCOLN – After meeting in executive session to discuss the potential sale of the former Fairlawn Elementary School on Tuesday, Lincoln’s Town Council members remained tight-lipped about the status of the deal. The council voted unanimously on Tuesday to “instruct the council president to act as directed in executive session” regarding the sale of the school. What, exactly, Council President Keith Macksoud has been asked to do, remains unclear. Pressed for more information after the meeting, Macksoud told The Breeze he could not say any more on the matter. ....

(Breeze photos by Robert Emerson) The COVID-19 pandemic couldn’t completely take away the beloved snow day from Rhode Island and Massachusetts, but for some districts, last Thursday’s storm looked a little different than previous years. In Blackstone, administrators from the Blackstone-Millville Regional School District announced a complete closure with no learning, remote or in-person, taking place during the day. The Blackstone Valley Boys and Girls Club was also closed as students enjoyed a welcome break from distance learning and the approximately 12 inches of snow the area received. ....
