The Big Sick This is based on the real-life true story of how comedian and actor Kumail Nanjiani and co-writer Emily Gordon met and eventually became a long-term couple. Nanjiani – who plays himself here – was an aspiring New York comic and part-time Uber driver when he met Gordon after a show. A short fling ensued and then fizzled. But then Gordon become extremely unwell and Nanjiani, despite being the last person that she, her friends or her family thought she needed to see, persisted. The Big Sick evades the clichés and turns in a truly moving and often hugely funny tale. Zoe Kazan is superb as Emily. But Ray Romano and Holly Hunter as her parents steal the show. Very recommended.
