Brookline police officers leaving faster than town can replace them

After nearly seven years, Brookline Police Detective Brian Sheehy resigned last month, giving up his title and seniority and relocating to Boston to enter that city’s police academy. 
The Brookline Police Department has lost a number of officers to other agencies in recent years, according to union President Michael Keaveney, but never a detective a position many strive years to attain.
Sheehy is among seven officers who have left since July 2020; vacancies officials say could be difficult to fill due to national staffing challenges and concerns within the department.
Recruitment struggles
Brookline is authorized for 135 officers and there are more than a dozen vacancies, according to Deputy Superintendent Jen Paster, a police spokesperson. ....

Brookline Prius owners report catalytic converters stolen

It probably doesn’t take Nancy Drew to figure out why several Brookline Prius owners have had their catalytic converters stolen recently.
Five Brookline car owners have seen their Priuses targeted within the last two months, and it might have something to do with the catalytic converters’ high concentration of palladium, among the world’s most expensive precious metals. 
Catalytic converters help reduce a vehicle’s pollutant emissions. A replacement for a Prius can run about $1,500 plus labor, according to RepairPal.com.  
Three cars in Brookline were targeted on Nov. 11: Two on Pleasant Street and one on Egmont Street. There were another two thefts on Newton Street, one on Dec. 3 and another Dec. 7, the TAB previously reported. Most of the callers who reported their catalytic converters stolen said the thefts happened during the night. ....
