Deadly Voyages: Haitian Migration Film and Panel Discussion. On Friday, June 17, 2022, join the in-person community event focusing on the largest Haitian migration to the U.S. in 20 years, hosted by the Miami Herald and the Miami Herald Impact Journalism Fund. The event will feature a screening of Cargo, a melodrama by Bahamian writer-director Kareem J. Mortimer about smugglers taking Haitians to American shores. The event will present a Miami Herald series supported by the Pulitzer Center. The series of reports, by grantee Jaqueline Charles, is titled Desperate Voyages and focuses on the measures taken by Haitian migrants to reach American shores and the causes of their exodus. Other panelists will include video artist Edison Peñafiel and local migration experts.
