As the senator thwarts Democrats’ major push to reduce warming, new data shows West Virginia is more exposed to worsening floods than anywhere else in the country.
On Sept. 24, the Bridge initiative for Science and Technology Policy, Leadership, and Communications hosted a virtual kick-off meeting for their new science and technology policy study on carbon dioxide removal. President Gee welcomed the group of more than two dozen faculty and staff members with expertise in CDR and related areas from Chambers, Davis, Eberly, and Statler Colleges, the Law School, the Energy Institute and the Extension Services.
New WVU Bridge Initiative aims to address most pressing water issues
In 2014, around 10,000 gallons of a coal-washing chemical called MCHM spilled into the Elk River near Charleston, affecting 30,000 residents in nine counties.
Two years later, floods ravaged central and southeastern West Virginia, claiming 23 lives.
These incidents and others, including human-caused disasters, flooding, deteriorating infrastructure and climate change, are all tied to one essence of life: water.
Now a coalition of West Virginia University researchers is working together to address the state s most pressing water issues through Bridge, a campus-wide science and technology policy, leadership and communications initiative. The impetus for the initiative is to translate the work of WVU researchers to policymakers as part of the University s land-grant mission.

FAIRMONT â Earth Day used to be fun.
âBack then it was kind of fun. We had a parade downtown â it was a celebration, now itâs a catastrophe,â said Paul Edwards, an adjunct professor at Fairmont State University.
Edwards, a retired professor and administrator at Fairmont State, teaches a course at Fairmont State called, âThe Future Global Crisis.â
âI started teaching the course, âThe Ecology of Manâ here at Fairmont State in 1968,â said Edwards. âThe course has evolved into what I now call âThe Future Global Crisis.ââ
