the executive director of james monroe s home, highland, and she has been the executive director there since 2012. i see that the college of william and mary has moved into their backyard because highland is a department of the college of william and mary. prior to assuming the leadership at highland, she worked as archaeological research manager at monticello down the road from 1999-2012, so she has been on that road for a long time. when i was in law school, i lived on brown mountain, so i know the area very well. she earned her ba magna cum laude from the university of arizona, then headed east and did her phd at the university of north carolina chapel hill, and she has also taught at chapel hill in the university of virginia, so we are delighted this afternoon to have sara bon-harper, executive director of highland. the smithsonian associates and the international spy museum cohosted this 80 minute event. good to see all of you here. i am a historian and curator. some of you i know, some of you i am meeting for the first time. i would like to welcome all of you to the spy museum and spy seminar, where we focus on the spies of the american revolution. the first two weeks centered on well-known personalities. you have the , which has an entire tv show dedicated to it now, and ben franklin is of course ben franklin. next week, we will look at the most infamous spy in u.s. history, benedict arnold. the relative obscurity of james lafayette is what will make this morning so interesting. he is someone we should know more about. his impact on world history is well known. historians are just now beginning to piece it together to find out new information and understand his impact on the revolution and figure out how he sits among the great heroes and villains of american intelligence history.

score of subtle harmonies before a note is stirred. and the nature now is pondering the title symphony of spring as yet unheard. this is a poem by john bannister , american poet buried in hollywood cemetery. here at hollywood cemetery we are anticipating the coming of spring. now many of the trees are dormant, but soon they will break forth with tremendous color and life. hollywood cemetery was beyondshed in 1847, just the city limits of richmond, virginia. the founders of hollywood hired , a philadelphia landscape architect, to design and layout they grounds. not rename the grounds, but the you name the grounds for the extensive growth of hollywood trees, and he transformed this wooded area into one of the most picturesque rural cemeteries in the united states. by the middle of the 19th century, american cities and towns had grown due to immigration and industrialization. the city churchyards and bearing grounds had become overcrowded. the rural cemetery was created to pro
