let us go back to the beginning, to november 197a. give me the context for this ira attack on two targets in birmingham. what was going on at the time? well, the ira had brought, as they would see it, the campaign to the british mainland, and they were planting bombs in many parts of britain at the time. when you say the campaign, it was their military campaign to get british forces, the british army, out of northern ireland. the army, of course, being there because of strife between the nationalist and unionist communities in northern ireland, which really kicked off in the late 60s. yes, that s right. the pub bombings were the culmination of a series of about 50 bombings in and around the west midlands, all done by the same group of people and always targeted against property rather than individuals. and in this case, the targets were not the pubs or the people in them. the targets were the tax office in new street, which was above one of the pubs, the tavern in the town,
