We write in advance of the 85th pre-session of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women and its adoption of a list of issues prior to reporting regarding Thailand’s compliance with the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. This submission addresses articles 1 and 10 of the Convention and includes information on protection of education from attack, access to education during the Covid-19 pandemic for lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and nonbinary students, and discrimination against transgender people based on gender identity. ....

The leaked AstraZeneca letter concerning negotiations over the domestic production and supply of its vaccine in Thailand has proven a slap in the face to the government and hammers home the reality of mistakes made in its national vaccination programme.
What a pity that the government, and Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, in particular, are unlikely to ever own up to their mistakes.
The government has resumed a policy of strict lockdown measures as the number of new daily infections soars past the 10,000 mark, yet for the public, tough controls are hard to accept when the administration refuses to learn from past mistakes as it pursues another common policy that of blaming others for its own failings. ....

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul admits he received a letter from the AstraZeneca company saying it has the capacity to supply Thailand with just three million doses of its vaccine a month.
However, Mr Anutin insisted he wrote back to say the country needed at least 10 million doses a month to combat surging daily infections.
The company s letter was dated June 25 and Mr Anutin s reply was made five days later.
In an interview with Isranews Agency, which obtained the leaked letter, Mr Anutin said he argued the country needed a much larger quantity. He advocated for at least 10 million doses a month for the national vaccination campaign. ....
