Labour has urged against abandoning struggling British high streets as the party outlined proposals to revive town and city centres “battered” by the coronavirus crisis. Shadow chancellor Anneliese Dodds said a Labour government would give councils the power to take over the management of empty shops as part of a plan to kickstart the post-pandemic recovery in communities. Under the proposals unveiled in a speech on Thursday, she suggested local authorities be given the power to repurpose commercial properties that have been vacant for at least 12 months to bring them back into use. We need a recovery from the Covid crisis that works for all parts of the economy and all parts of our country.
