The new Southwold Harbour Management Committee will look after the attraction s operations - Credit: Nick Butcher Four independent community members have been appointed to the newly-formed committee which will be responsible for the day-to-day running of Southwold Harbour. The harbour, a popular tourist attraction in the Suffolk coastal town, is under threat due to rising sea levels. Its north pier fender is also damaged and in need of repair to protect boats navigating to and from the Blyth Estuary. A repair project at a cost of up to £1.1million - funded from existing East Suffolk Council capital budgets and reserves - was approved last November.

Southwold Station Yard: Business hub plans going ahead

A CGI of the proposed Southwold business hub - Credit: Archant Community leaders in Southwold have insisted that £3million plans to build new office and retail units at a business hub in the town are still going forward . Southwold Town Council’s scheme to create the hub, also known as the Station Yard Development, would involve revamping several council-owned buildings on the corner of Station Road and Blyth Road. The site is set for a major transformation that would replace the buildings in a scheme that councillors have said could create up to 90 jobs. In September 2019, Southwold Town Council secured a grant of £995,000 from the government’s Coastal Communities Fund to help pay for the redevelopment.

Major expansion of salmon aquaculture coming for N.L., to chagrin of critics

Posted: May 02, 2021 11:33 AM NT | Last Updated: May 2 Wild Atlantic salmon in 20 rivers in the Bay d Espoir and Fortune Bay areas are predicted to decline in numbers and genetic diversity following an expansion of aquaculture operations in 2019, according to a DFO study.(CBC) Salmon aquaculture farming is set to expand in Newfoundland and Labrador, despite alarming research into how the business might affect wild salmon populations. The Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture is eyeing a particular tract of water on Newfoundland s south coast for future farms, which it says could contribute to economic growth in the province. The department issued an expression of interest last October for the Bays West area, which it describes as a remote greenfield area  lacking infrastructure such as wharves, storage facilities, and roads.
