Ballard Announces Membership in Hydra Consortium for Delivery of Fuel Cell-Powered Heavy-Duty Mobility in Mining

Burnaby, BC, April 22, 2021 (T-Net) Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ: BLDP; TSX: BLDP) today announced that it is a member of the Hydra Consortium - together with Mining3, a leading research organization in the global mining industry and ENGIE, a global player in low-carbon energy and services. The Hydra Consortium will enable heavy-duty mining mobile equipment to run on renewable hydrogen, displacing diesel and decarbonizing the mining sector. Ballard will provide zero-emission fuel cell systems that run on hydrogen, to power mining equipment. The Hydra Consortium is now actively working to validate the business case for a hydrogen fuel cell-based powertrain in heavy-duty mobility within the mining sector.

Mining3 and ENGIE combine to drive decarbonisation in mining

Advertisement Mining3, a leading research organisation in the global mining industry, and ENGIE, a global player in low-carbon energy and services, have announced the commencement of the Hydra Consortium. The Hydra Consortium is now actively working on validating the business case of utilising a hydrogen fuel cell-based powertrain for heavy-duty mobility within the mining sector. This will enable heavy-duty mining mobile equipment to run on renewable hydrogen, displacing diesel, and as such decarbonise the mining sector. To achieve this target, several workstreams will be executed, amongst others a pre-feasibility and engineering study of a powertrain and the renewable hydrogen value chain. This includes designing, manufacturing and testing of a 200 kW fuel cell plus battery powertrain prototype under mining conditions (altitude, dust, temperature, etc.). Mining3, a research organization focused on the mining industry, and Engie, a global player in low-carbon energy, announced the starting of operations of the Hydra Consortium, a joint effort aimed at promoting the use of hydrogen fuel cell-based powertrain for heavy-duty mobility within the mining sector. In a press release, the companies said the Consortium is currently working on building the business case that will support such a goal and which includes a competitiveness analysis and a pre-feasibility and engineering study of a powertrain and the renewable hydrogen value chain. This PFS involves the designing, manufacturing and testing of a 200kW fuel cell plus battery powertrain prototype under mining conditions.
