When one thinks of the gamelan it is usually the brash sound of a metallophone ensemble. Seldom will it be the Gamelan Jegog, which is an ensemble using bamboo as the resonators. Our usual perception of bamboo is the wispy green shoots beloved of pandas. In the west of Bali the bamboo grows much larger. This image shows an instrument in the background, which has two players, and another in the foreground, with only one player. You can see how thick the bamboo is on the latter. It is slung under the player who sits on the frame.
