punta gorda. trees whipping, winds topping 130 miles an hour. across florida there are people trapped in their homes. entire homes being flooded out, people swimming inside. one city hit hard is bonita springs. part of that city are now completely underwater. the storm surge has knocked homes completely off their foundations as well. and to the south of there, the city of naples cat 4 winds there have completely demolished buildings. look at how high up that obviously you never know what s in these waters now. you ve got chemicals and everything in the middle of these towns. according to forecasters, the storm surge reached more than 6 feet, flooding cars and homes, even leaving rescue crews stranded. the water was so high that officials had to wade through it to rescue people who did not evacuate. and let us show you one astonishing image from just before ian came ashore. look at that. it s almost like a tsunami was coming. the winds and the storm actually sucked all the w
hour. the category 4 storm is currently barreling across southwest florida with winds up to 150 miles per hour. more than 1.5 million people in the state are currently without power, and that number is growing. but the most imminent and life-threatening concern is the storm surge. some areas seeing 12 to 18 feet. to give you an idea of just how severe that is, a meteorologist for the national hurricane center says no one alive has seen 12 feet of storm surge in that area, and many areas could take years to recover. just take a look at this surge today. the dangers are a reality for many who chose to hunker down and wait out the storm despite the evacuation orders. take a look at what family told nbc affiliate wbbh as their house flooded. so this is ft. myers beach on cutlass drive. it s four of us. four of us? on cutlass drive. and you re on the second floor already? yeah. six of us in here. do you have do you have a roof? 15 feet of water now. there s 15 fe

around the eye some distance away, what happens is once it goes through the eye wall replacement cycle, the eye collapses and we ll watch the convection around it tighten back up like getting strong again. each time it goes through one of these and it can take several hours to do so, it gets stronger and it gets larger. this has enough time unfortunately to go through this cycle before it makes landfall so on a grander scale we re already starting to see some tornado warnings in the everglades right now. they have now posted a tornado watch that will be in effect until 5:00 a.m. that s an extraordinary amount of space and time to deal with that and the problems with the tornados, they re not like in the midwest and plains, they spin without notice, usually ef 1st and ef-2s. there is significant differences, jake, as we mentioned from where it would stall off the coast of the bay and turning to the right and we still could see that happen. there is plenty of time for this to h
