The Winona area faces a serious affordable housing shortage and building sufficient numbers of homes to meet demand has been challenging without enough skilled workers to replace those who retire.
Winona County Profile data shows that the County needs hundreds more affordable owner-occupied housing units. The construction industry needs an influx of new professionals. Habitat for Humanity Winona-Fillmore Counties and Minnesota State College Southeast are teaming up to forge a solution.
The nonprofit and the college will collaborate on the construction of one new rural home per year for qualified Habitat for Humanity homebuyers, and the work will serve as the lab for MSC SoutheastConstruction Technology students. Using post-construction financing through the USDA 502 program, funds used to build the home will immediately be recycled into the program.

WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)- Gilmore Avenue Car Wash and Quick Lube says they raised $869.42 for the Habitat for Humanity Winona-Fillmore Counties during their Community Wash Saturday event.
Throughout 2021, Gilmore has pledged to donate all sales from the first Saturday of the month to local organizations.
“We’ve been blessed beyond imagine and it’s time to give back to say thank you,” said Gilmore Avenue Car Wash’s Tiffany Schindeldecker.
Schindeldecker estimated the community wash events from February through April raised a combined total of over $4,500. The habitat joined the likes of the Warming House, Winona Volunteer Services, and the Winona Symphony Orchestra as beneficiaries of the event.

Skappel family
(KWNO)- Midtown Foods and the Habitat for Humanity Winona-Fillmore Counties are partnering up for a fundraising effort.
The partnership is a round-up at the register campaign.
“When you go through that checkout line with that friendly person they’re going to ask if you want to round up [your grocery bill] to the next dollar,” said Habitat Marketing Coordinator Jesse Darst. “Over those two weeks that little bit of change is going to add up to big dollars.”
The campaign runs from now until Feb. 16. Darst said the proceeds will go to the Skappel family, who is partnering with the Habitat to build a home in Winona.
Winona couple sacrifices home-building plan to salvage items for Habitat for Humanity

So instead, the Winona couple decided to remodel their home of 25 years and donate as much of their used materials as they could to Habitat for Humanity to support the organization’s mission of safe, decent housing for all.
The Skarlupkas informed their contractor at the outset that they wanted to keep as much as they could out of the dumpster.
Fulfilling that goal meant Randy has spent days doing delicate tasks such as pulling down oak trim boards and removing each nail so they wouldn’t be ripped off the walls and damaged.
