Afghanistan was closing out its ninth year. And of course for a long time it hadnt been just american troops fighting the war against the taliban in afghanistan. A lot of our allies joined in the War Effort too. For years, for example, the British Army had been engaged here in the town of sangin in Helmand Province. And that area Helmand Province prominently but that Area And Sangin was a key center for the opium trade. It was also just absolutely swarming with taliban fighters. So on the earlier side of the war, the first decade of the war, the british were deployed there to try to beat back the taliban, prop up support for the afghan government there, and that experience was just absolutely devastating for the British Army. By June Of 2010 the british had lost around 300 soldiers total in all of afghanistan, but nearly a third of that number, nearly a third of all the british soldiers killed in the entire country, in the entire war, were killed in sangin in just that one single town
