our children, the education of our children and we have to say that we need to get our children back at all costs. we know how to do this with relatively lower risk and the risk of keeping them out of school is much higher than whatever risk of covid there is to children and to teachers. we re talking briefly before we came on the air and you said what you re trying to find is the right nuance in this time where people see all this confusing conflicting data. that s pretty difficult, isn t, it when you see the staggering case count, hospitalizations up, pediatric hospitalizations up. it pulls you back. you re trying to suggest that we can lean forward a bit. that s right. i think there is a this conflicting message that is perhaps natural because the issue is the risk to the individual person who is vaccinated and boosted from omicron is actually very low, but at the same time the risk to society because of the number of people getting infected is very high so we have to reconcil
and how we process this. is it 1,000 new cases, or 1,000 new case but none are serious? right. no, i m with you on that. you know, both things potentially can be true. you could have a very contagious virus. that might be causing less severe disease. but here s the issue. we still don t know the full denominator of what we re talking about here. you re talking about college students. theres been these outbreaks among athletes as well. younger, healthier parts of the population. and we know that even going back to the original strains, people who are younger and healthier were less likely to get sec in the first place. but what is the true denominator here? and also when you have so many people still dying today. 1,300 people have died every day. hospitalizations up, as you mentioned. 120,000 new cases.
more serious. and we need to pay attention to what is going on. and particularly as we see hospitalizations up, and the majority, if not all, that many hospitals are reporting, are people who have been unvaccinated. in your view, is it time for this country to get ready for masking mandates coast to coast? i think when we think about masking mandates, certainly the cdc, and i certainly respect dr. walensky. she came out to talk about what is the difference between vaccinated and unvaccinated people with the mask. if you re vaccinated, you don t need a mask. but if you re unvaccinated, you need a mask. and both stopped wearing masks. this was a choice, it was not a message that had gone awry.
covid-19 vaccination will give you a far more robust protection. and so we don t have any guarantees about the natural immunity, but we do know that with the vaccinations it s much better. so we actually recommend that everyone, even if you ved had the covid-19 infection, you should get vaccinated, and we have many cases of people who have had natural immunity and then they ve also gotten sick with covid-19 again. and so everyone should get vaccinated in order to protect us and to stop these surges which, of course, we re surging in all 50 states. hospitalizations up, we ve got to stop it. arthel: yeah, we do. i ve got another quick 40 seconds here. los angeles county has reinstated the mask mandate while you re indoors even if you are fully vaccinated, other cities considering or slowly reimposing some of these restrictions. so how can they do this without completely shutting down businesses and communities? you know, that s really, really frustrating, arthel,
