Good morning to those throughout the world. May 18th, is the 125th anniversary of the Plessy Versus Ferguson supreme Court Decision. Some people believe this decision solidified institutionalized separate but equal. One other thing well learn today is that america was already separate. Before separate but equal, before Plessy Versus Ferguson. And what you will learn is that it is a troubling and difficult exercise to trace current inequalities to things that happen 125 years ago. The original Theme And Intent of the conference and of the journal of social sciences was to ask this question. How is it possible for something that happened 125 years ago to have a continuing impact on measure, observed, racial and ethnic inequalities. Representing the narrative arc of the popular story of the civil rights movie. We are going back to our topic of origin points, with the objective of putting those events and contacts, but also troubling the idea of them as origin points. Last week we discussed brown v. Board of education, the decision, response, the impact, and also the legacy. I want to talk more about the legacy as we go forward. We will not do that today. Spent time we talking about the emmett till case, the lynching of emmett till in august of 1955. We used a mix of secondary and primary sources to consider how ideologies of race, gender and justice impacted that case and the lived experience of the people in the case. I wanted to take a moment to pull out and say that this week, what happens this week that is of significance in relationship to the emmett till case. Anybody paying attention . Yeah . Ahead. This book, its an interesting book because National Geographic has a series called remember, and the whole idea is to tell stories as much as possible through eyewitness accounts and through contemporary photographs. Now, the first two books that i wrote in this series were called remember little big horn, and remember the alamo. Now, how i became the expert on eyewitness accounts of battles where everybody died i dont know, but [laughter] but as the curator at the alamo said, everybodys got to have a niche. Also ive written a lot of history, and this is the first book ive ever written where lots of people were still alive. And that was a wonderful, wonderful experience because i got to interview,
