Childhood Behavioral Problems Linked to Maternal Smoking

Childhood Behavioral Problems Linked to Maternal Smoking

Behavioral problems in early childhood are associated with a pregnant woman s exposure to tobacco smoke and pollution from road traffic, revealed a recent study led by a team from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), a centre supported by the la Caixa Foundation.
The study, published in Environmental International, is the first to investigate the impact of the exposome i.e. the set of all environmental exposures, both chemical and non-chemical, during the prenatal and postnatal stages on child behaviour. Previous research had assessed the impact of environmental exposures separately but not as a whole. ....

HIV Inflammation Linked to Higher Smoking Intensity and Duration

HIV Inflammation Linked to Higher Smoking Intensity and Duration

Research, carried out by Krishna Poudel and colleagues, has found positive linear relationships between inflammation and the intensity, duration, and pack-years of smoking in HIV-positive people.
Poudel says the study s findings suggest that people living with HIV would benefit not just from quitting smoking but from smoking less. He also points out that a high level of inflammation is associated with a greater risk of disease and death in HIV-positive people.
While it is important to support and encourage people living with HIV to quit smoking ultimately, it is also important to suggest they reduce the frequency of smoking until they can fully quit. That would also help their health status by reducing inflammation, he adds. ....

Wildfire Smoke Dangerous Compared to Other Pollution Sources

Wildfire Smoke Dangerous Compared to Other Pollution Sources

While this distinction has been previously identified in laboratory experiments, the new study, published in the journal
Nature Communications, confirms it at the population level.
This study reveals the risks of tiny airborne particles with diameters of up to 2.5 microns, about one-twentieth that of a human hair.
These particles termed PM2.5 are the main component of wildfire smoke and can penetrate the human respiratory tract, enter the bloodstream and impair vital organs.
There is a daily threshold for the amount of PM2.5 in the air that is considered acceptable by the county and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), said researcher Rosana Aguilera from University of California - San Diego. ....

E-cigarettes Do Not Help Quit Smoking

E-cigarettes Do Not Help Quit Smoking

Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes, in the form of mass-marketed consumer products do not lead smokers to quit smoking, said a new study published in the American Journal of Public Health, a team led by UCSF s Richard Wang, MD, MAS.
E-cigarette use has risen steeply and mostly without regulation over the past decade. The devices have diversified into a dizzying array of vape pens, tank systems, mods, and more, mass-marketed and sold to the public.
In these applications and related advertisements, the owners of e-cigarette brands claim that their products help smokers quit and can therefore be considered appropriate for the protection of public health, as stipulated by law. But a new systematic review by UC San Francisco researchers of the scientific literature on this topic puts those claims to the test. ....
