GRETA publishes 10th General report on its activities 10 Apr 2021
The report includes a dedicated section on the impact of Covid-19 on combating human trafficking and a further section on the identification of trafficked persons amongst asylum seekers and access to international protection by victims of trafficking. La Strada International supports the concerns that the CoE Expert Group raises in the report, including about the worrying impact of the pandemic, which has further increased the vulnerability of large groups of persons, in particular persons in irregular situations or irregular employment.
La Strada International and member organisation earlier raised concern that law enforcement and labour inspectorate scaled down and that there was less control and opportunity to identify trafficked persons leading to lower referrals in several European countries. Covid-19 pandemic is having a worrying impact on human trafficking across Europe and states should do more to prevent it, according to the latest annual report from the Council of Europe’s
Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA).
“The effects of the pandemic have made victims of human trafficking even more vulnerable,” said GRETA President Helga Gayer.
“Frontline NGOs have reported delays in people being formally identified as victims of trafficking, which seriously affects their access to safe accommodation, healthcare and much-needed support whilst also putting them at risk of further abuse,” she added.

LONDON, April 9 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Human traffickers across Europe have taken advantage of the coronavirus pandemic to exploit more vulnerable people, while efforts to bring them to justice and support their victims have been disrupted, a European human rights body said on Friday.
COVID-19 restrictions and the economic fallout have worsened the outlook for victims of trafficking on the continent, who are less likely to be identified or able to access healthcare and shelter, according to a report by the Council of Europe (CoE).
