A preliminary state count reveals that 1,309 wild turkeys were taken during youth hunting weekends of March 26-27 and April 1-2. Compare that with 2022, when a total of 1,258 turkeys were taken. Gary Harpole, owner of Harpole's Heartland Lodge in Pike County, said being outdoors after a long winter is exhilarating. "If everything comes together for a turkey hunt, it's one of the most beautiful things in nature. Seeing the tom come in; if he's strutting or gobbling, it's just a really cool experience – especially for children."
