Charles Mays was born February 5, 1931, to Betty and Houston Mays at home in Hamilton, AL. Charles dropped out of school when he was in the eighth grade, in order to help his mother after his father suffered a stroke. He learned how to drive at 17 and started working at a local corrections institute.
