Nestled in Papua New Guinea s remote highlands region, the Mount Hagen Hospital has about 250 beds and services about half a million people.
As a result, the hospital usually functions at or above capacity, and that s outside of a pandemic.
So, when COVID-19 cases began to surge this year, the hospital was put under even more strain. It escalated further when staff themselves soon became infected. We ve had about 110 staff who have been infected, or are currently, with COVID. And yes, when you have a limited pool, that does mean that you need to redirect services, manager of the Mt Hagen Hospital and acting chief executive of the Provincial Health Authority, Jane Holden, said.
