crimes case. and so while the state trial found all three men guilty of the murder of ahmaud arbery, gregory and travis mcmichael getting sentenced to life without parole, this is more so going to look at the reasons why they decided to chase him down in the first place that ultimately resulted in their death. federal prosecutors now have the burden, the responsibility, essentially, of pursuing that they were motivated by race, they were motivated by ahmaud arbery s skin color. the fact that he was a black man led them to make several decisions about him. so why this is noteworthy is that here in the state of georgia, up until last year, after the ahmaud arbery case, there was no hate crimes law on the books. it s there now, but it does not apply retroactively. so that means that the federal hate crimes statute is the only way that race can really come into this conversation here. we know that in a number of pre-trial hearings, the
