Law faculty hosts, alumni and guests from across Aotearoa New Zealand and around the globe gathered for three days of reminiscing, reuniting, and sharing legal expertise and insights at University of Otago Law celebrations at the weekend.
Senior police officers help a critically injured supermarket manager into an ambulance following Monday’s attack. The grocery manager is understood to have himself suffered knife wounds when he went to the aid of a female colleague who was stabbed in the back by an assailant. Footage shows him being taken to an ambulance by a paramedic and senior police officers, his hand bloodied and one side of his body heavily bandaged. The injured man was heard to ask a bystander if he could find his phone so he could message his family. He and the other three victims – another supermarket worker and two customers – remain in Dunedin Hospital.
It was the scene of a frenzied stabbing, and now the supermarket where four people were attacked has been cleaned and a blessed before customers are welcomed again.

Police tape preventing access to the car park was removed on Wednesday morning. The car park remained off limits to media as a large of number of staff gathered outside the store on Wednesday morning. Countdown did not give a specific opening time.

A blessing was held for about 50 staff. Senior police also attended. “Our focus now is on helping make sure our team’s return to the store is as peaceful and as healing as it can be, and we would ask both the public and the media to respect our team’s privacy as they do this,” spokeswoman Kiri Hannifin said.

The brother of a prison guard stabbed in the neck during a rampage at a Dunedin supermarket wants to thank the “hero” who saved his life. A Corrections Officer at Otago Corrections Facility and his wife, believed to be a Customs employee, were among four people who received serious knife wounds during the attack at Countdown Dunedin Central on Monday afternoon. It is believed the man was stabbed in the neck, while his wife was stabbed in the back.
