A Māori aquaculture pioneer is welcoming the new plan for Tīkapa Moana, the Hauraki Gulf as a good start.
Harry Mikaere says the spatial management plan announced yesterday by Environment Minster David Parker and Acting Conservation Minister Ayesha Verral manages to balance industry and customary interests.
He says Hauraki iwi have little land but extensive interests in Tīkapa Moana that can be developed.
More work is needed on recreational fishing to get a measurement of how much is being taken, and he also wants the effect of land-based activities to be better appreciated.
