‘Animated Violence Mild’ was the best electronic album of 2019. When that blood-and-apple-core-adorned opus was unveiled, newcomers and longtime Blanck Mass fans alike were wowed by its hybridity. Equal parts funky synth lines, metal screeches and erratic electro beats, it was a space where aggression and intellect collided head on.
But its successor ‘In Ferneaux’ could not be further from this searing sense of ardour. As opposed to the relative accessibility of ‘Animated Violence Mild’, context is key in understanding what this album seeks to achieve.
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is the backdrop. Musicians are scrambling for their livelihoods in a world without gigs, their only true source of income in a streaming-dominated market.

Blanck Mass has laid out plans for new album In Fernaux .
The producer has collected a huge library of field recordings from his global travels, which form the spine of the new record.
Out on February 26th via Sacred Bones, the album is split into two pieces, alternating long-form journeys.

Blanck Mass Lines Up February Release For New LP In Ferneaux , Shares First Single Starstuff Monday, 11 January 2021
Blanck Mass, aka Benjamin John Power, has shared details of his fifth studio LP. In Ferneaux will arrive on February 26 through Sacred Bones and feature two parts: Phase I and Phase II, with a total running time of 41 minutes.
As a preview, Power one half of the dormant Fuck Buttons has unveiled an excerpt called Starstuff, a three-minute slice of celestial electronica that builds through shimmering synths to a colossal crescendo.
The album was recorded during the 2020 lockdown period of the COVID-19 pandemic and according to a press release, explores pain in motion, building audio-spatial chambers of experience and memory. Press play below.
