Baghdad, 25 April 2021 - FAO Representative in Iraq, Dr. Salah Hajj Hassan, and the FAO expert, Dr. Chedly Kayouli, accompanied by the Director of Nineveh Agriculture, Dr. Duraid Hikmat Tobiya, have undertaken field visits on Thursday 22 April 2021 to villages in Al-Qosh sub-district, to meet some of the beneficiaries of the FAO-EU funded project “Support to agricultural livelihoods of rural and peri-urban returnees and communities in Nineveh Governorate, Iraq.”
In the morning, the mission met with a cattle dairy producer Ashur Yoel Khio in the village of Berozawa. He received green fodder seeds (ryegrass) while his mother is processing and marketing traditional dairy products such as butter, yoghurt and varieties of cheese. Pope Francis, leader of the Catholic Church, begins a historic four-day visit to Iraq on Friday morning, marking the first papal visit to the country. The pope s schedule will see the 84-year-old cleric crisscross the country.
His visit includes church services in the capital, Baghdad, and in a stadium in the northern city of Irbil, a meeting with senior Muslim clerics in the southern city of Najaf, and a helicopter ride to the northern city of Mosul. The idea of interfaith fraternity – we are all brothers – is the official slogan for the March 5-8 trip.

While Iraqi troops advanced further into territory held by the so called “Islamic State” in their campaign to recapture Mosul, they found a mass grave which holds about 100 bodies, many of them decapitated. AP footage shows bones and decomposed bodies dug out of the ground by a bulldozer. This Iraqi federal police officer holds a stuffed animal he found on the site.

The grave, found near the town of Hammam al-Alil near Mosul, proves to be a dark testimony to the „Islamic State’s“ brutality. IS militants have carried out a series of massacres since seizing large areas of southern and central Iraq in 2014.
