Bombay HC disposes fisherfolk's plea against BMC's coastal road project

Bombay HC disposes fisherfolk s plea against BMC s coastal road project Vidya Bombay High Court has disposed off a petition that was filed against Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation s (BMC) pet project, the coastal road. What is the case about? Petitioners who are traditional fisherfolk primarily from the Haji Ali Bay area in Worli had approached the court praying that the court should restrain BMC from obstructing the fishing operations being carried out by them from Lotus Jetty which includes anchoring and operating fishing vessels, mending nets and storing fishing equipment. The 10 petitioners who were before the high courts also sought that BMC should rehabilitate them at an alternative site where they can carry on their fishing operations and until that is done, the fishermen said that BMC should not interfere with the fishing operations being carried out by them from Lotus Jetty.

Five fishing boats damaged in high tide near Haji Ali

Five fishing boats damaged in high tide near Haji Ali The fishermen blamed the civic body and the ongoing coastal road project for their loss Five fishing boats belonging to the members of the Vanchit Macchimar community were damaged on Wednesday due to the high tide of the sea. However members of the community have blamed the civic body and the ongoing coastal road project for their loss. To facilitate the ongoing reclamation at the Haji Ali bay, on-site engineers of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have dismantled the hangars at the Lotus Jetty where the fisherfolk used to park their boats. Now the fishermen have to park their boat in the shallow waters, 500 metre way from the Lotus Jetty and the jetty area is now being filled with boulders and stones. The fishermen claimed, due to the heavy water current the boats collided with boulders and were damaged.
