Our View: Polystyrene foam ban is smart, important

We banned plastic bags and although we are in the phase of being inconvenienced, it is good for our environment and future.
Banning Styrofoam, or polystyrene foam, is the natural next step. Styrofoam promises to do even more damage to our environment and our community than plastic bags ever could.
Styrofoam takes hundreds of years to break down and there is argument on whether it actually breaks down or just breaks into little pieces and remains in the environment. Styrofoam also releases chemicals into our environment, especially if it’s incinerated.
The Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, which the United Nations proclaimed four years ago to be 2021-2030, will provide a framework for countries to manage the ocean and achieve the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The UOG symposium will emphasize the urgency of this critical period as the ocean suffers from climate change, overfishing, pollution, and habitat destruction, the release stated.
