Trucks Included in Maryland's Updated Safety Plan

Trucks Included in Maryland’s Updated Safety Plan Maryland Department of Transportation Addressing risks associated with commercial motor vehicles is an objective outlined in the Maryland Department of Transportation’s recently released highway safety plan. The 2021-2025 Maryland Strategic Highway Safety Plan, released Jan. 28, identifies strategies and actions meant to help eliminate fatalities on state roadways. Between 2015 and 2019, some 11.5% of fatal crashes in Maryland involved a commercial motor vehicle. As strategies to addressing truck-related risks, the plan proposes advancing efforts supporting infrastructure modifications to reduce fatalities involving freight vehicles and educating drivers, enforcement officers and motor carriers about trucking regulations and visibility issues.

Beltway Road Widening Project Would Add Four Toll Lanes | Montgomery Community Media

Beltway Road Widening Project Would Add Four Toll Lanes What started as 19 options to reduce traffic congestion on I-270 and I-495 has boiled down to one. State highway officials chose their preferred alternative which would add high-occupancy toll lanes in both directions on both roads. The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration recommended adding toll lanes across the American Legion Bridge north along I-495 to I-270 and I-370, according to the state’s fact sheet. The recommendation, announced in a news release Jan. 27, also includes a bicycle and pedestrian crossing across the new American Legion Bridge, which links Virginia and Maryland.

Maryland DOT Weighs Three Proposals for Major P3 American Legion Bridge (WUSA9 via YouTube) The Maryland Department of Transportation has received three proposals from teams composed of private sector firms interested in becoming the developer for major interstate improvement work. Specifically, the firms are vying for responsibility to oversee predevelopment work on the American Legion Bridge and Interstate 270. The American Legion Bridge carries Interstate 495, known as the Capital Beltway, over the Potomac River between Montgomery County and Fairfax County, Va. I-270 is an auxiliary interstate linking I-495 in Montgomery County and I-70 in Frederick, Md. MDOT’s plans include constructing a new American Legion Bridge and developing options for reducing traffic congestion along I-270. The projects are part of MDOT’s I-495 and I-270 Public-Private Partnership Program.
