And, of course, the number of fatalities would probably not be the number that it currently is. Another big challenge here, mike, is housing. Why . Theres not much of it. Its expensive to rent or own. And unlike, say, the mainland there are not any towns that can simply absorb 4,500 people right now that need shelter. Lahaina was really small, nice historical place, and its gone. All the kind of, like, precious memories of my kids and kind of generational stuff. Reporter so eva adams, she lost her home. It was in this new 89unit, Affordable Housing complex that is now, of course, as you see, just ashes. There are about 2,700 buildings here that were destroyed in lahaina, 86 of those were homes. And the community of lahaina is a very working class, a lot of Native Hawaiians who serve the resorts, and right now those people who are now home
up to $300,000 worth of merchandise. and in july thieves got away with merely $900,000 of jewelry during a smash and grab in irvine. all this as a bill as passed by the california senate is drawing scrutiny. introduced by democrat state senator steve cortes city, it reads in part: under my senate bill, 5553, employers would be prohibited from forcing their non-security workers to confront active shoplifters, and all retail employees would be trained on how to react to active shoplifting. like many retails retailers, including the california chamber of commerce, are calling this overreach. mike? mike: alicia acuna, thank you so much. mike: the surge of my grant withs at our southern border increasing strain on both boarder efficients and cities across the nation. new york city is working on identifying additional locations within its five boroughs to house the overflow of migrants
congress to improve this bill. that s what the legislative process is all about. and we re not going to we re going to do a couple of different things with a few recent amendments that are worth mentioning and are owing in part of to the engagement we ve had with congress. first off, we re going to stop any more states from expanding medicaid and adding a burden to future generations. we re going to give states the option of block grant withs of medicaid to the to block granted so states like florida can innovate and design medicaid around the unique needs of the people in this community, and we re going to allow states like florida to include a work requirement for able-bodied adults insuring that medicaid s benefits are are available for those who need them most. [applause] now, these are all common sense solutions added to this legislation in a vigorous debate on capitol hill under the president s leadership.
