BATON ROUGE, La. - After LSU gave all sororities and some fraternities a 48-hour deadline to get checked for COVID-19, thousands of Greek students overwhelmed the campus’ largest testing site
Cisne High School seniors Grace Milligan and Lauren Grace Conard have been named Illinois State Scholars. Illinois State Scholars represent approximately the top ten percent of seniors from 726 high schools across the state, and are chosen based on a combination of ACT or SAT scores and sixth semester class rank. Wayne City High School seniors Kelcee Seymour, Kalyn Meritt, Adam Koker, Jarrett Lewis, Madelyn Caudle and Jaden Boyd have also been named Illinois State Scholars.
The Illinois Department of Public Health announced 3194 new cases of the coronavirus Saturday and 23 additional deaths, bringing the totals in the state to 1,299,575 cases and 21,653 deaths. Wayne County has a total of 1723 cases in the county as of Saturday morning with 12 people isolating. Reports from around the area Saturday indicated one of the deaths was from Marion County and one death in Alexander County, with the remainder in the Chicago area.
COVID-19 vaccinations are currently available for Fairfield residents, and will be distributed on Tuesday, March 16

The much-anticipated decision on the fate of the Wayne County Courthouse will not be known for at least some time. The board failed to take any action during the meeting concerning the building, but an Executive Session at the conclusion of the meeting concerned the possible purchase, lease or acquisition of property. No action was taken by the board at the conclusion of the Executive Session. David Harl addressed the board in support of keeping the courthouse, citing its architectural and historic value to the community. Jail Committee Chairman Nathan Jones stated that the board was investigating its options if the Qualified Immunity for Police Bill passes in the Illinois Legislature. The Edwards County School District will conduct a pre-school round-up next month for children up to five years old who will not be eligible for kindergarten next year. For students in the Albion attendance area, the screening will be held on March 8
th from 8:30 to 2:30 at the First Christian Church. West Salem students will be screened on the 9
th from 8:30 to 2:30 at the Moravian Church. Appointments are required for the free program; Albion area residents can call 445-2325, and West Salem area residents should call 456-8881.
