Registration open for Tire Society conference

Registration open for Tire Society conference Registration open for Tire Society conference Rubber & Plastics News Staff Mike Anderson, Christian Oertel, Michael Stackpole AKRON Registration is open for the Tire Society s 40th annual conference on tire science and technology, which will be held virtually Aug. 30 through Sept. 3. Sessions will be held in the morning hours of the Eastern time zone (afternoon in Europe and evening in Asia) to encourage global participation. The keynote address will be delivered by Mike Anderson, General Motors Executive Director for Global Virtual Design, Development and Validation. Anderson and his team are responsible for the computer-aided engineering of every component, sub-system, and integration area of all current and future GM vehicles. He is also president-elect of FASITA, a world body promoting excellence in mobility engineering and a member of the Exascale Computing Project Industry Council.

Virtual design of Cadillac Lyriq cuts dev time and ensures quality

Cadillac Mike says it’s actually the opposite case their deep understanding of materials, loads, how parts interact with each other along with the ability to run hundreds, sometimes thousands of durability tests has engineers “accounting for variations we could never imagine before.” A notable example is the tough one-quarter overlap crash test where engineers can crash a digital vehicle over and over, gather vast amounts of data and modify parts in real time. The old way: run the prototype into the barrier, examine the wreck, glean what’s needed and send it to the scrap heap. And yes, some virtual crash results are now being accepted as official.

They can also use VDDV for crash testing. With physical crash evaluations, the amount of obtainable information is inherently limited due to the vehicle being destroyed with each trial, said Anderson. With virtual testing however, we re able to acquire extensive new data on how the complex network of vehicle systems and components perform leading up to, during and after a crash. GM doesn t just do one overlap crash test at 25% of the vehicles width at 40 mph. It can do a million, at any overlap, at any speed. We re trying to get to 100 percent virtual, including the human being, Anderson said. We have this global human body model and we know more about soft tissue injuries than we used to. We upload thousands of slices of MRIs from real people to get these models right, and all of the pieces talk to each other.
