At the last District 202 School Board meeting, held just two days before Evanston Township High School is scheduled to open for hybrid learning, administrators described the ongoing efforts to make the school safe for students, faculty and staff.
A lingering question for teachers is whether the air quality in the building is as safe as administrators have said it is.
Assistant Superintendent/Principal Marcus Campbell said at the April 12 meeting the air ducts “are cleaned on a rotational yearly basis. Spaces that do not have an HVAC system, such as the gyms and the fieldhouse, have exhaust fans that run at all times during the building occupation. The air moved by the exhaust fans is replaced in these locations with air from outside that has gone through the roof filters.”

, president of District 202 Teachers’ Council, said District 202 superintendent Eric Witherspoon’s announcement was an abrupt end to their time spent working together.
“(The announcement) was a shock. We were not counseled and were not talked to,” Schelbert said. “It was just decided, and it appears that the decision was a unilateral action by Dr. Witherspoon that was not supported by other administrators or teachers.”
At a board meeting just two weeks ago, Schelbert said the administration and board members applauded the district’s current model, where academic courses are entirely remote and some extracurricular activities are offered in-person. Administration and board members agreed the model was working well and complimented it as “thinking outside the box.” The change in plan, then, felt sudden to Schelbert.

Buckner’s father in a Tribune interview said his son’s isolation and lack of school activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to his struggles.
“I would argue, and I believe strongly, that Dylan’s death is not going to show up in COVID statistics, and yet absolutely it’s a COVID death,” Chris Buckner said.
Las Vegas-area school officials moved quickly late last year to get schools reopened after noticing a spike in suicides and an uptick in a student mental health monitoring system. Eighteen students had died by suicide as of December. The superintendent of schools, Jesus Jara, wanted to move quickly to get kids back into their school routines.
