Springfield, 6 other Western Massachusetts communities remain at ‘high risk’ of COVID

SPRINGFIELD Springfield recorded 548 new cases of COVID-19 last week bringing April’s total to 1,278, said Mayor Domenic J. Sarno during a weekly update on the pandemic at City Hall.
“We are still in the red, we cannot be lax. We must wear still wear our masks and take the necessary precautions,” Sarno said Tuesday.
Other Western Massachusetts communities still at high risk include Chicopee, Holyoke, Ludlow, Monson, South Hadley and West Springfield.
Sarno read reports from the Police Department, Fire Department and Department of Public Works noting that only one firefighter is out with COVID-19 at this time.

SPRINGFIELD The Gerena School tunnel project, delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic, is back underway, city officials said Monday.
Field surveys have been completed and traffic studies of the tunnel system are expected to begin this week.
The school tunnel, which is used by students and community members to get from Main Street to Plainfield Street under Birnie Avenue, has been plagued with leaks for more than two decades. Flooding has led to mold and made several rooms attached to the tunnels unusable. The rooms used to serve as community rooms for after-school activities.

“I have been doing work in this community for 40 years and being on the Springfield City Council would allow me to continue to do that work,” said Perez, who currently represents District 1 comprised of Wards 1 and 3.
Springfield Election Commissioner Gladys Oyola said the City Council is currently working on an application process to fill Gomez’ seat and if Perez was the selected candidate she would have to vacate her current seat.
