the fbi director says the attacks don t appear to be racially motivated, local officials say it s too soon to make that determination. new surveillance shows the suspect pulling up and parking. he then tro to two other spas in the atlanta area, and killed four more people. for the latest on the lives cut short by horrific mass shooting. reporter: while authorities i saying they re still investigating to determine whether the spat shoot, were racially motivated. fbi director wray told npr on thursday that he doesn t believe race played a role. while the motive still remains under investigation, at the moment it does not appear that the motive was racially motivated. but i really would defer to the state and local investigation on that. for now. reporter: the fbi is currently playing a limited role in the investigation into the killing spree. director wray s comments upsetting leaders in the asian-american community. it s infuriating. everybody who is looking at this is l

reporter: yeah, i met with jamie webb, the daughter of xiaojih tans, and her ex-husband. they were both so gracious to give us their time as they re grieving, trying to set up funeral arrangements. what struck me is their celebration of tan s life. she was about to turn 50 years old. she missed her birthday by two days. you know, i asked her daughter, who is a recent uga grad, about the last time she talked to her mother. it turns out that when this all happened on tuesday, the first indication that something was wrong was somebody abruptly called her daughter, asking, do you know the password to the surveillance cameras? she ended up spending hours and hours in the waiting room of an emergency room at a hospital, waiting for information, seeing the headlines actually come through her phone first about the number of people who died at the location of her mother s business, and then finally getting the news by the end of the night. just an incredibly difficult experience for

we begin with disturbing news out of michigan. michigan is now experiencing a third surge in coronavirus cases. officials are pointing to a number of factors for this rise, from increased gatherings to reopenings to several outbreaks in schools and prisons. dr. wen what do you believe is the main driver behind this third surge in michigan. i think that s whapg in michigan could well be happening in other parts of the country. we are seeing upticks in massachusetts, in the new york area and other places too. i think what s happening is that we have three factors here. on the one hand we have vaccinations really picking up, which is great. we re at 2.5 million vaccinations a day. on the other hand we have restrictions that are being removed. we ve got mask mandates that are being lifted and more contagious variants that are occurring, that are becoming dominant. and that s really concerning. if we have something that s more transmissible, it means that all the activities we t
