It is very disconcerting that the Garda Representative Association (GRA) is running with a motion of no confidence in Garda Commissioner Drew Harris. The gardaí are supposed to be an organised disciplined force and such a stance is unworthy of the organisation 100 years after its foundation during which time it contributed so much to the new state. ?
Máirín Quill’s letter (‘Collins statue proposal not in tune with the city’, Irish Independent, Letters, June 10) gave various reasons why a statue of Michael Collins on his bike should not go on display in Cork’s Grand Parade. Seeing as this great patriot did the majority of his cycling around the streets of Dublin, why not transfer this statue to any street in the capital where I am sure it would find the respect it deserves?
