One of most prominent civil war historians, drew gillman foust, argued that killing or trying to get christians to kill for their country was harder than trying to get them to die for their country. The argument was that christians have all along typically had this sense of self sacrifice. But getting someone to actually take up arms and kill, that was the harder courage. That was the harder obstacle to overcome for a lot of people in the civil war era. And thats the same case in the revolutionary war era. The same kind of situation.
