From bonktastic Bridgerton to a dire royal deepfake: the winners and losers of this year's festive TV

Our holly-adorned verdict on an underwhelming Christmas menu from the small screen 2 January 2021 • 1:36pm Bridgerton (l) proved bingeably popular, while Channel 4 s Alternative Christmas Message attracted viewer complaints  Credit: Liam Daniel; Channel 4 The schedulers might have served up a menu of thin gruel and reheated leftovers but with the nation stuck indoors, we still spent a lot of time in front of our TVs this Christmas. So who was a shining star and who was a total turkey? Here s the Telegraph s round-up of all the hits and misses from this year s festive viewing.  WINNER! Channel 5 Traditionally much maligned, the fifth terrestrial channel is a growing force nowadays. It demonstrated why over the past fortnight. The first Christmas special for its acclaimed All Creatures Great & Small remake was one of the loveliest festive treats anywhere. Elsewhere, its roster mixed trips to Yorkshire farms and steam railways with cannily scheduled, crowd-pleasing tribute

MIRANDA HART: Such festive fun!

Presents, practical jokes, inflatable Santas… MIRANDA HART’s festive traditions may be reassuringly hilarious. But, as she reveals here, they can also be lifesavers    I’m very grateful that YOU magazine has posed me a series of Christmas questions. It has not only given me a chance to acknowledge and relish the joyful traditions that I love, but at the end of this most bizarre and challenging of years, it has reminded me that there are still things of joy, goodness and fun around us. It’s easy to get stuck in a negative spiral when we’re faced with daily doom and gloom. The way to break that is to seek out the good, the beautiful, the joyous, the lovely – it hasn’t gone away. I love what Hans Christian Andersen said: ‘The whole world is a series of miracles, but we’re so used to them, we call them ordinary.’ This year has given us the chance to name those things as miracles that we used to take for granted. In your face, Covid!
