and no leads in that cocaine mystery at the white house. the secret service just briefing lawmakers on their investigation. our nbc news reporters are following all of the latest developments. i want to begin with that update on the cocaine discovered at the white house. nbc s ryan nobles is up on capitol hill, where it looks hot and the heat was on those investigators. what did they tell those lawmakers? reporter: not very much. at least when you talk to republicans, chris, they seemed very unhappy with the information that the secret service was able to provide both the oversight committee and homeland security committee. republicans believe that this is something that secret service should be able to figure out, that they shobe t narrow down the list of suspects, question those suspects and come up with an answer. they were given the strong impression from secret service officials today that when the investigation concludes, they ll not ultimately come to that answer. an

Taylor greene claims to be basking in her freedom after she was officially booted from the conservative house freedom caucus. just the latest example of gop infighting that s been creating headaches for speaker kevin mccarthy. greene s break with the caucus began latehen she publicly backed mccarthy s speakership bid, and now mccarthy is dealing with the delay in the critical vote on defense spending. garrett haake is on capitol hill. brendan buck is a former aide to house speakers paul ryan and john boehner as well as an msnbc political analyst. good to see you guys. garrett, what more do we know about the breakup between greene and the house freedom caucus? i didn t see anything on page 6. reporter: this is a very kind of high school cafeteria story line, as it has been for the last week or so now. the freedom caucus doesn t publish their membership, and they have been trying to not talk about this too much. it s clear they have become fed up with some of the activities
This is what their priorities are. there are a handful of holdouts. the freedom caucus doesn t like this deal. let me just play for you earlier what they had said about how much faith they had in this. how much confidence do you have in the speaker right now? none. zero. what basis is there for confidence? is the speaker lying about the way he s characterizing this bill? yes. if there is a departure from that specific commitment, to have a minority or majority, that would be trouble for the speaker. scott, did their obstruction no matter? no, there s no drama here. it will pass by a wide margin. i think in both house and senate, these people criticizing kevin mccarthy, as if he can go out and order the president of the united states to have a position, or did the democrats who control the senate to have a position. they need to take a long, hard look in the mirror and understand one thing. the reason that they don t like this deal is not because kevin mccarthy, is because
They don t want things to pass with the support of democrats. and, you know, so these are the things that mccarthy is probably going to have to give a lot on. there s a negotiation there. the mccarthy s people argue that the freedom caucus doesn t need any rules changes because there is such a slim majority. they have so much power. but the big thing that the freedom caucus wants is this rule called the motion to vacate the chair. and that was done away with during the boehner-ryan speakership time. any member can call and try to remove the speaker of the house, it really weakens the position of the speaker, especially in such a slim majority. that is debate. so mccarthy doesn t have to cross that hurdle.
