About every 10 minutes during the work day, a healthcare worker at Parkland Health Center is getting a COVID-19 vaccine.
Parkland received doses of the Pfizer vaccine on Wednesday and started vaccinating frontline workers on Thursday. Vaccinations continued on Friday and will continue today and next week.
With a time slot every 10 minutes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., thatâs been about 50 vaccinations per day.
There are about 500 staff members, Parkland Medical Director Dr. Scott Kirkley said, and they received almost enough in this first shipment to vaccinate everyone who signed up for it.
Kirkley got his on Thursday afternoon. Heâs says it feels like getting a flu shot.
Parkland Health Center hopes to start giving its healthcare workers the COVID-19 vaccine by the end of the week, according to Parkland Medical Director Dr. Scott Kirkley.
BJC HealthCare in St. Louis is expecting the first doses of Pfizerâs vaccine to arrive at its ultra-cold storage on Tuesday, he said. BJC is offering the vaccine to all employees.
âSo our oldest of healthcare workers that are patient-facing will have first option,â Kirkley said. âWe ll get the vaccine as early as starting on Thursday.â
This means anyone working directly with patients will be first priority, starting with the oldest employees.
The St. Francois County Health Center will not be getting the first round of the COVID-19 vaccine due to the required ultra-cold storage and handling, according to Nursing Supervisor Linda Ragsdale said.
âWe currently are on calls almost daily with (Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services) for updates as to when we will be receiving the vaccine that is not required to be stored at ultra-cold temps,â she said.
She said health care workers and long-term care facilities will be first priority for the vaccine.
On Thursday, a U.S. government advisory panel endorsed widespread use of Pfizerâs vaccine, which needs to be stored at negative 94 degrees Fahrenheit.
