facebook whistleblower broke her silence on 60 minutes saying its products are harmful to our children and harmful to our democracy. francis hougan walked out of her facebook job with thousands of documents, promptly leaked to the wall street journal. she ll testify tomorrow morning before congress after she agreed to blow her cover and tell her story last night. one of the consequences of how facebook is picking out that content today is that it is optimizing for content that gets engagement or reaction. but its own research is showing that content that is hateful, that is divisive, that is polarizing, it s easier to inspire people to anger than it is to other emotions. facebook has realized that if they change the algorithm to be safer, people will spend less time on the site, they ll click on less ads, they ll make less money. facebook over and over again has shown it chooses profit over safety. it is subsidizing, it is paying for its profits with our safety. faceb
