good evening, everyone. my name is nick turner, i m lucky enough to serve as the president of the vera institute of justice. i m glad to have all of you here and to have an audience from c-span here as well to participate in this discussion. we re very lucky, i want to say a little bit about what we re doing tonight and introduce both fox and dan in a second. but first, i just want to say a quick thing about the vera institute for those of you who don t know. this is a wonderful organization that has been committed to justice reform longer than i have been around. i m lucky enough to be the fifth president of it, but we got our start in 1961 working to reform the bail system here in new york city. there remains lots of work to be done nationally, and we are still a part of that. the organization is a terrific one that s committed both to producing what we hope are breakthrough ideas that inspire the kind of change that we need in american justice systems, but also delivering
penn presbyterian. great doctors, great staff. reporter: 57-year-old councilman underwent surgery overnight but he bounced back quickly and askeing to home. he spoke about the terrifying encounter with a knife wielding suspect. the next thing i know he s there next to me with an urgent look on his face. reporter: councilman oh says he realized immediately something was very wrong. and then he punched me in the lower rib which i happen to know what that is so i said, did you just stab me? and he had. i looked down and he had a seive more than a knife it was a seive. he said, keys, car, wallet, cash, everything. he said i want everything. at one point in time he lunched at my, you know, face i had to put my hand up and i got cut across the forearm. reporter: in the middle of the attack council om revealed several men in white car pulled up asking do you need help? but thinking it was the suspect who was in trouble. they took out their smart phones and they were

passengers were injured and our police and fire personnel and e ms from delaware county hospital got them off the trains and out to area hospitals. i was talking to a guy at gulph mills. he is like that is not right, it never passes like that. i almost waited for the next train. we got to the terminal. i stood up to get off and get to my bus on time and smack, it hit the other trolley, parked. reporter: so last number that we received was 42 injured people four transported to hospitals with traumatic injuries, including, the conductor of that train. remember back in february, a train derailed at this same station after crashing into a stopped train seriously injuring the operator there, that crash did not involved any passengers. so again, an investigation underway into exactly what caused this train to crash shortly after midnight here at 69th street station, thomas and karen. we will learn more throughout the morning, darby, . another big story is going to be bill c
reporter: what s joe said after hearing firefighters rushing to the scene around 2:00 a.m. on march 13th. these pictures show the burned up back end of his car and the devastated front portion of the nissan that was parked behind him. it s not something you expect to find sunday night when you went to bed and to come out and see your new car is melted into the street. reporter: we showed joe the video lee he sed by police showing a man in red hoodie carrying a gas can as he walked through the sunoco station on oregon avenue. minutes later, police say the two cars were set on fire. the video shows the suspect running back passed the gas station and tossing the gas can on the roof of a garage. his image captured by another camera as he gets away. saw the video. it s unreal. it s really good. i hope they can catch see somebody. i didn t rec night the guy myself. reporter: joe is driving rent car for now as he and his insurance company deal with the damage car headach
