Currently in our 112th year, the Economic Club of new york is the nations leading Nonpartisan Forum for discussions on economic, social, and political issues. More than 1,000 prominent guest speakers have appeared before the club over the last century, and have established a very strong tradition of excellence. I would like to take a moment to recognize those of our 297 members as the Centennial Society attending today in the front of the room as their contributions continue to be the financial backbone for the club. Over the next hour and 15 minutes, well hear from local authors about the areas history, politics and literary landscape. We begin with a visit to Montana State university and a look inside the collection. A well known antenna author, 16 memoirs and novels, he was raised here in montana. At her invitation and possibly a little bit about what we can do if she decided to deposit the collection with us and came back and wrote a proposal and a key feature of our proposal was that we said we would digitize the entire collection in less than a year so because digitize the entire thing is available on the internet for anyone in the world to see. Primarily we have documents. We have a lot of sound recordings and a lot of photographs, diary entries, obviously many books manuscripts for some books we have as many as seven manuscript versions so a lot that goes to the writers process colin medical records, all of that. Backdrop on this vote on the debt what the republican strategy to lowering the federal debt is. What is the medium and longterm plan . This is certainly reaching crisis proportions. You have a debt in excess of 21 billion. Proposals like medicare for all will add over 30 trillion. This is crazy. One of the things we have to do, we have met with folks this week and last week talking about better ways of valuing the Public Benefit of different federal investments. Everyone knows you can look back at the percentage of the budget attributable to mandatory spending programs, programs not subject to annual congressional appropriations, that has exceeded far in excess of 70 of the overall budget. Up from percentages as low in the upper teens, even the low 20 percentile range decades ago. We have to attack the mandatory spending side and make sure we apply criteria that looks at the value generated from these investments, just like any private company would fo, just like a family at home would
